Why It Is Important To Attend Lectures

We are in an engineering college and its our common tendency to bunk lectures. For a long time I couldn't figure out why is it important to go to lectures, so I continued my bunking. Following are some rationales that motivates us to not attend lectures:
  1. If we can score well enough in exams just by preparing in one night out, then why.
  2. Why not give our valuable time to things that are, we consider, more important.
  3. If we bunk lectures, its assumed to be cool within our student community, good for a youth, then why.
  4. When somebody else is preparing notes and we can use them in the way we wish to, then why.
  5. If we don't understand something then there are hell lot of intelligent and dedicated people around us to help.
Well, now I have something that motivates me to attend lectures, all, in fact even those which are not in the academic curriculum and even not related to my academic interests and here it is.
Consider following situations:
  1. Somebody said, we learn more by experiencing it than just knowing it.
  2. If you tell a child to stay away from something than he's more eager for it.
  3. If you tell somebody that climbing this rock is very dangerous, and if it were me to whom you are telling then I'll definitely try it because I consider myself more efficient into this than others, but while doing this if I myself find it dangerous than only I'll agree with you.
  4. When you are thirsty, pouring water on your body does not help, you have to swallow it into your throat.
Lets give a thought to the above described issues:

Superficiality does not work, it has to be believed from deep inside to be useful. Suppose you want to learn something, you approached somebody and he taught you the technique, you are very impressed because he was very effective and easy to understand (now you only know it but don't believe from inside), but now to use it to its full extent and to get full benefit out of it, you have to practice it so that you can get enough fluency while using it. Now what does this practice do, you are just repeating the same task like an idiot while you already know it, ain't you? But what the practice do behind the scene, it makes the technique sink into our subconscious, somehow our brain recognizes the pattern and just use it the next time we do it. But if we don't practice it, every time we do it, we have to extract the technique from our memory (recall it), process it for the current situation and then use it, and it takes hell lot of time and mistakes. Instead, what practice do is to make a template ready for us, which we can use anytime with a little modifications, if necessary, it gives efficiency and grace.

Now coming back to lecture thing, when we prepare for exams in previous night, it's superficial, you'll remember it for a day or two and still you will probably crack the exam, provided that exam doesn't require a lot of scary concepts. But if you would've attended lectures, even passively, you'd have been aware of a lots of issues involved and possible remedies that a single night can not reveal. Further, if you don't understand what the instructor is telling even than, the various issues he raises, or unknowingly comes out of his mouth (if prof is dumb) will make your mind to relate various things and it will make your understanding clearer. This happens because the subject taught in lectures in continuously fed into your mind with slight variations each time (just as we practice the same technique repeatedly, in previous paragraph) and the concept starts sinking into our subconscious without our knowledge.

Think about it, in your own way.

The Great Debaters

Everybody praised the movie, but I'm neutral. I felt nothing special the moment I finished watching it. Immediately I tried to figure out positive/negative points about it, but, surprisingly I found nothing as good or bad. I, certainly, got inspired by some of the lines, said by some great people, quoted in the movie but I don't think that it's good enough. So now what I think is that I didn't get the sole of it because I did not understand it completely, may be there's some other reason behind this. But there is one strange reaction of mine, if somebody asks me for a good movie then I certainly tell him that 'The Great Debaters' is worth watching. what is it? Am I having some kind of mindset, am I faking myself for some reason, may be this reason is that I want to show that I'm different. I don't know what is it?

My Apology

Big Thinking requires questioning deeply held assumptions.

An Issue:
Why apologizing is considered to be important when I misbehave with somebody. Old people clarify this by saying that it makes you realize that you've done something wrong, it clears your heart and it helps you to avoid the same mistake in future; (well, saying sorry just for the sake of saying it is more than stupidity, according to me) but I say sorry only when I've already realized it, to clear my heart I can even say this to somebody else and if I've already realized my mistake then I'll not do it again in future. Then why to say sorry to the person this mistake concern?

Possible Consequences:
Well, explanation in above paragraph is just one side of a coin, what about the person on another side, he may be forced (by himself) to think that he's done something wrong, while he's not, he may think that there's one person out there who does not like him, he may make wrong opinions about me in his mind and worse is, he can spread it around, which can damage me later. And the worst part is that this all go subconsciously and hence undetected in most cases but the consequences are terrifying.

My Take on it:
This is what I consider a major factor of mutual understanding between two persons. The more our minds are clear about one another (the less secrets we have) the better we can work in coherence which results in more productivity, less disputes and hence better personal relations and mutual trust.

Conclusion:
So better say sorry whenever you think you should, it will definitely make you more courageous, will result in more lucid relationships and hence will free your mind for peace and happiness.
The more we open up, the more we all grow.

PS:
Questioning deeply held assumptions is necessary to eliminate false beliefs, superstitions and unwanted junk from our society and that is crucial to think big, to innovate.

What's your take on it???

Freedom - A Deeper Understanding

Last Updated: Jan 14th, 09
Instance 1. Once I did something, something very special, I was very happy and wished to remain like this forever. And Now, enters a friend of mine, telling me that I couldn't make into JEE, and this one sentence from his mouth, vanished all of my happiness. Whyyyyyyy. But I wanted to be happy.

You see, somebody else is able to ruin my mental state, when I don't want it. Isn't it called slavery when somebody else is controlling me and I'm not able to do what I want.

Instance 2. One day I was very angry and going to argue with one of my colleague, because he complained to my boss about me. On the way, a person, unknown, came to me and appreciated me for the way I presented my ideas and views about something in front of an assembly yesterday. He said it was very effective and impressive, I thanked him like a gentleman and he left. My chest swelled with pride because I prepared for it a lot. But then, when I faced my colleague, I did not want to do any argument and felt good about him that he made me realize my mistake. What. But I went there to argue with him.

Hay, some unknown person had a hold over my mind more than I do, he changed my mind. And again I felt that I'm not free to do what I want , I don't have freedom, do I?

Instance 3. I love to roam around in my favorite half sleeve blue colored t-shirt, without any other wearing over or underneath it, but in winters, I just can't do it. Weather is stopping me from doing that. Can't I have enough resistance in my body for that bloody cold. Weather is controlling my dreams, and I'm not, right?

Instance 4. I don't want to eat more pizzas because it hurts my health so seriously, but I'm tempted to have one more, because I'm standing in front of a McDonald. Similarly, I want to go for morning walk because my doctor suggested me that it would be beneficial for my current health status, but I just can't get-off from my bed early in the morning. Who is forcing me to do what I don't want to, and the other way, stopping me from doing what I want to? Am I free to do what I think I should?

Instance 5.

Instance 6.
Instance 7.

Are there any more such situations with you? Think about it...

I'm trying to be free, are you??

Diseases - Why?

Last Updated: Dec 15th, 08
आग लगने के लिए बस एक चिंगारी की जरुरत है, पर आग वहीं लगती है जहाँ भूसां भरा होता है |

Are we afraid of being drenched in the rain, when sky pours it freshness in the form of lucid drops somewhere in the middle of November, if yes, think why, most of the time we all keep on collecting a lots of dirt in our body (probably by malicious but tasty food, irregularities in lifestyle ...) but we are never bothered to cleanse it, and now when weather changes, this explodes in the form of common diseases (a.k.a. cold, sneezing ...). Think once, from where all that dirt will come out of your body because your regular draining system is not enough.

Think about it.

Death - What may it mean to us?

One Question
Why do we have skills? Definitely we've learned them somewhere sometime, but when? I don't know, even I've never been exposed to such context. Then how is it that I don't need to put any effort for some sort of work, but others do? How can I do it so easily as I've been trained for it? Is God being partial or he has some kind of random mechanism to grant these?

My Analogy to Life
And that comes from our previous lives, which I call as "पिछले जन्मो का पुण्य (Results of your last lives)". We did something significant in our previous lives, although we don't remember it, but it is always with us.

Life is like a chapter of some book, we've started somewhere heading towards somewhere else, each chapter makes a little progress towards its destination. Any chapter doesn't make any sense to the journey without its preceding ones followed by next ones. But the chapter gives something on its own, it has got some meaning and it has its own importance, but is it all? No. it must be seen as a whole book rather than a single chapter. When we're reading this chapter we don't know where it's heading towards, but we make a best guess from the current knowledge (gained from previous and current chapters) and move ahead to next one and as we move ahead we get clearer and clearer about the destination (but I don't think that's important because we never know it for sure, caution: it can mislead us if we'll assume it incorrectly, so better don't do).

A bit of Explanation
This is the way, I think, life is. When we die, don't think its all over, this is just end of one chapter, we should have something to move with, to the next life. Are we really moving towards the final destination (weather we know it or not, as said above), are we really making the best move or we've stuck in (individual chapters) current life only? Keep the big goal in mind.

However, it's not expected to ignore the present, in the view of the final destination, because you never know it, what you do is just a wise guess. If something is in front of you, think why, that means it is to be done by you (if you encounter a very vague paragraph in the running text of chapter, no matter how irrelevant it looks to you, but it is here because it has something to do with the book, may be you'll realize it somewhat later, but think, can you ignore it?), and the better you do it, the better is your move.

In my view, the best policy of life is to keep moving ahead, finish whatever you encounter on the way, with the best of you, meanwhile you'll get the knowledge and experience which will help you ahead, no need to think what is next to come. If you're doing good with the present you're on the right way, even if you don't realize it. And think logically, even if you get to know what is next, what can you do is just, best of now.

Keep acquiring knowledge and skills, which will automatically come, if you're doing your job honestly. The more we earn today the longer we'll leap tomorrow. But what is important is that we should remember that this life is not a dead end, it continues far after that, so don't think of quick results and this is what वैराग्य (विगतो रागों विषयेषु यस्मात् स विरागः, विरागस्य भावौ वैराग्यम , i.e. do not associate thing with you, you are just a care taker) tells us. But be cautious, this doesn't mean that you are not allowed to do certain things, do whatever you think needs to be done but keep the bigger picture in mind (the notion in this line needs a lot of experience and wisdom to decide, but still, it doesn't matter at all, what you can do, is just, best of you, and that is perfectly all right, provided you are being honest).

One more thing
We all have not started from the same place at the same time and also we don't put same efforts, so some of us are ahead and some are behind, and that's why we all are at different positions having different skills of different levels and enjoying varying degrees of lucks.

So keep going to next chapters with little progress in each one. Acquire more and more in this life so that you don't complain in the next one, in fact if you do, it was all your fault, so correct it. Remember that everything you earn doesn't go with you पर कुछ तो है जो साथ जाता है, so identify them and focus on them.

Conclusion
Death is just a refreshing stay in the journey, you get one, you start fresh.

Whatever is written above is certainly not created by me, it is all there, always. But probably I've realized it. People say these all the time, but we don't realize its meaning, I tried. Take any saying popular among us, think on it and you'll get to know. For example we all know झूंठ बोलना पाप है, but do we REALLY "know" it?

Think about it.
